| Scope of this project: remove a section of 300mm diameter ductile iron water line and construct a vertical offset underneath a concrete freshwater stream diversion. A a window of only 12 hours (8:00 pm to 8:00 am) was required to accommodate daily commuter traffic.
Original drawings specified a prefabricated steel offset costing $9,000. The City of Langley determined that they could achieve the same results with epoxy coated One Bolt restrained joint fittings for $6,500.
- 9:00 am – One Bolt vertical offset fabrication
City of Langley public works crew assembles vertical offset at a location adjacent to the site in only a few hours using One Bolt 45° fittings. Fabrication savings = $3,000.
- 10:00 pm – Trasnport of One Bolt underbend
Heavy machinery hoisted the 4.5 m long ductile iron preassembled One Bolt vertical offset to the site at Highway 10.
- 10:30 pm – Unexpected issue in the field requires quick solution
The open excavation revealed a discrepancy between the design drawings and the actual installation depth of the watermain. The new offset must now be installed over the concrete diversion rather than under as originally intended. A prefabricated steel offset would have been scrap at this point! The site would have been closed up for a second installation scheduled at a later date with a new fabrication. With the One Bolt solution, the crew was able to dismantle the unit and quickly re-assemble to create a custom restrained joint solution right there in the field! The savings here alone could have easily been more than $20,000!

- 11:00 pm to 4:30 am – Concrete stream diversion
The field adjustment required a change to the sequence of installation. The 300 mm offset assembly would now be installed after the concrete stream diversion was in place.
- 4:30 am – One Bolt overbend installation
By this time, the Langley crew has now removed the section of ductile iron pipe and is commencing with installation of the just-assembled One Bolt vertical offset. The ability of the One Bolt connection to maintain a pressure seal at a 40° deflection angle is a welcome benefit. The One Bolt coupling positioned at the top of the assembly enabled the crews to get the custom dimensions "just right".

- 6:00 am – Project completed
An intended offset under became a vertical offset over a gravity line courtesy of the versatile One Bolt fitting and a quick thinking field crew.
