Leaking manhole chambers sealed without excavation |

| Scenic Chestermere Lake, east of Calgary, Alberta, has been silently infiltrating into manhole structures on nearby roadways. Given that all wastewater is now pumped to Calgary for treatment, this lakewater is taxing residents in treatment costs, pumping expenses, and pipeline capacity. EPCOR Utilities has a long term utility management contract to operate and maintain Chestermere’s water and wastewater utility. EPCOR recently used Prime Resins polyurethane grouts to seal a leaking manhole from chronic infiltration.
The Lakeside Greens manhole location was estimated to be leaking at more than 560 cubic meters a month, which translated into an annual treatment and pumping expense of more than $4,000. Did you know that storm inflow and infiltration can increase total inflow by 15% at the Fish Creek wastewater treatment plant in Calgary?
Martech’s Derek Traquair co-ordinated the leak repair with EPCOR manager Al Ellesworth. Prime Resins tehnician Scott Kelly was on hand to demonstrate the application versatility of Prime Resins grouts. EPCOR’s Travis Arnold quickly became profficient at drilling injection points and pumping Prime Resins grout solutions to tame the leak. Smaller leaks can be handled with convenient hand held resin cartridge applicators. Total site time was about two hours, and cost, including crew time, resulted in a payback of less than 90 days!
EPCOR is now positioned to apply the Prime Resins solution to all manhole leaks on East and West Chestermere Drive. Savings on these routes alone will yield a significant immediate benefit for Chestermere residents, not to mention a safer confined space access point for EPCOR crew members.

Unlike temporary cement type surface patches, Prime Resins are injected through concrete structural leaks so that the groundwater carries the solution back in through the joint or hole to effect a long term solution. Prime Resins are formulated for gushing leaks, flexible crack seals, and potable water compatible applications.
