Last week, Martech exhibited TPS pipe repair products at a Saskatchewan distributor’s trade show. The group at the show saw how Hymax, Ez-Max and Versa-Max pipe repair couplings and clamps were designed to be easy for the field technician to install for long term reliability.

WHICH EQUIPMENT TO USE WHEN REPAIRING A PIPE BREAK:

  • Pipe break requiring new section of pipe: use Hymax or Versa-Max couplings to couple in the new section of pipe.
  • Small break not requiring new section of pipe: use Ez-Max repair clamps to clamp over the crack and stop the leak.
  • Small break where pipe is deflected at angle between 0° and 3°: do not couple in a new section of pipe. Instead, use Versa-Max repair clamp (this clamp can handle 3° deflection in the pipe).

Total Piping Solutions (TPS) is a pipe repair leader in North America. Their Hymax couplings set the industry standard for ease-of-install and reliability.

Designing High Pressure Water Lines With Air Valves And Pipe Couplings

Calgary engineers designing a high pressure water line to service the rapidly expanding city of Airdrie used TPS Hymax pipe couplings and ARI D060 air valves to solve important problems in the pipeline design.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS ON THIS HIGH PRESSURE WATER LINE:

  • Air release/vacuum valves that can handle the 160 psi (11 bar) operating pressure on this 24″ diameter pipeline
  • Couplings that can also handle that high pressure 160 psi flow
  • Engineering consideration: couplings need to accommodate deflection in the pipe over the life of the pipeline
  • Contractor consideration: air valves and couplings that are easy to install (save labour time)

WHICH PIPE COUPLINGS TO USE ON A 24″ HIGH PRESSURE WATER LINE?

The TPS Hymax HYCO24 pipe coupling is installed with 4 bolts by two people in about 45 minutes. This means the 4-bolt Hymax large-diameter coupling can be installed 90 minutes faster than its 12-bolt competitor.

The Hymax coupling satisfied both the engineer’s and contractor’s demands. The couplings are installed easily and quickly in a trench that doesn’t need to be as deep as the competitor’s 12 bolt version. The labour savings realized during the installation of the Hymax pipe couplings saved money for the contractor and the municipality.

The compression seal design in the Hymax pipe couplings allow up to 8° of deflection in the pipe (4° at each end of the coupling). As the heavy concrete chamber settles over time, the deflection allowance from the coupling means that the pipe won’t crack or rupture from stress at the coupling.

WHICH AIR VALVES TO USE ON A HIGH PRESSURE WATER LINE?

ARI’s D060 high flow combination release/vacuum air valve was selected for this potable water pipeline. The air release function of the valve automatically releases pockets of air from the pipeline when it is full and operating under pressure. The vacuum component allows large volumes of air to flow in and out of the pipe during the filling or draining operations. This valve will open to relieve negative pressures if water column separation occurs.

4 Reasons To Use Hymax Couplings During Waterworks Pipe Repair Jobs

A water pipe breaks underground.  An immediate response from service and repair crews is required. How long will it take them to repair the pipe?

Shutting off the water service, digging up the damaged section of pipe, removing it, coupling in a new length of pipe, filling the hole and laying new asphalt is a time consuming and expensive job. In Canada’s northern cities, pipe repair is often a very cold job. Cities in Manitoba are using TPS Hymax pipe repair couplings to make the work go faster.

WHY DO CITIES IN MANITOBA USE HYMAX PIPE COUPLINGS?

TPS designed the Hymax multi-range pipe repair couplings to be installed with a minimum amount of time and effort.

1. Hymax installs faster – the coupling goes on the pipe with only one bolt per end
2 .Less digging – no under-dig required with Hymax top-bolt tightening action
3. Fast pipe cuts – long 12″ couplings mean faster pipe cuts and less time in the ditch doing the repair.
4. Multi-range couplings means municipalities can reduce their repair inventories. “One size fits many pipes”.

I made a follow up call to a customer in northern Manitoba who had just received his shipment of TPS Hymax pipe repair couplings. This sale was facilitated by one of our partner distributors in Manitoba.

The call was to thank the customer for the order, to offer any technical support and to ask for personal feedback on the use of the Hymax repair coupling. The customer let me know that they’d been using the Hymax coupling for some time now and love it. The light-weight, multi-range gasket fits all pipe sizes.

“The faster you can install the repair coupling onto the pipe, the less time repair crews are stuck working in the cold, hard dirt.”

The quick Hymax two-bolt tightening system also earned praise. In the north, they are quite often installing and repairing pipes in tight spaces with very little room because of the bedrock.  This is where only having two bolts really comes in handy. Any way you can spend less time “in the hole” is a good thing. This is where the Hymax coupling gives operators and installation workers a true benefit.
